A musing from last month: on work and life
I’ve always felt attached to my work, in order to feed my craving for validation and to feel “okay” – or like I matter in life. This feeling I term conditional worthiness and is what ultimately led to my burnout. Recently, ahead of a meeting with a marketing client, I felt the old pattern return. If this doesn’t go well and I get negative (or lack of positive) feedback on my work, I won’t be okay. What I continue to realize on a regular basis is how we have all internalized this feeling of conditional worthiness: that we see ourselves as the sum of our quantifiable life deeds done, rather than seeing that we are the greater being behind the deeds done. We need to realize that we are more than our job titles – and the other roles we play in life. Yes, we need to do certain actions to get by day-to-day and we can take pleasure in doing them, too but:
We must always remember that we can choose to pursue a fulfilled lifestyle, where what we do serves our lives, without over-identification with the outcomes. In this lifestyle, our mental wellbeing is preserved, regardless of the outcomes of our actions.
Yet, our society’s gravity pulls us into an addicted lifestyle, where what we do defines our life worth, because we are over-identified with what we do. In this lifestyle, the outcomes control our mental wellbeing, and we are always at-risk for anxiety and depression.
This is the challenge for us citizens of the modern world, who live in a world amongst the endless addictions of accomplishments, status, and things. We have more convenience and possibility than at any other time in history, but as they say, with great power comes great responsibility.
And now, onto the essays!
